Dr. William Hammer

Principal Investigator

William R. Hammer first went to the Antarctic in 1977-78 as a PhD student of John W. Cosgriff at Wayne State University. At that time the only known vertebrate fauna from the Transantarctic Mountains was from the lower Fremouw Formation and this group collected many new Early Triassic taxa from the Cumulus Hills near the Shackleton Glacier. Hammer returned to the Antarctic as a post-doctoral student and expedition leader in 1980-81 and then became the Principal Investigator on an expedition in 1985-86. He has since led expeditions in 1990-91, 1995-96, 1999 and 2003-04 as PI. He is currently the Fritiof Fryxell Professor of Geology at Augustana College.
